WHITAKER, Pa. (AP) – A tiny borough near Pittsburgh is paying $350,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a woman who said an officer smashed her window with a handgun after she drove away from a traffic stop because the officer was wearing shorts and a T-shirt and no badge.
Thirty-year-old Danielle Newton claimed she didn’t know Whitaker Officer William Davis was a policeman when she drove away and called 911 in June 2012. She contends the officer caught up with her, threatened to use a stun gun, then broke her window with his pistol as she was talking to a 911 dispatcher.
The officer was charged with crimes, but acquitted.
Whitaker’s attorney tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (https://bit.ly/1rqM6a9 ) that Newton dropped her civil rights claims against the officer as part of the borough’s settlement.
