Many patrons of the arts see New Horizon Theater as a jewel of the city.
“It’s good that they are a grassroots organization. Hopefully we can continue to support them. It will only survive if people support it,” explained Jason Muhammad, a Penn Hills resident who has faithfully followed New Horizon’s work since 2006. “It’s good to get involved with artistic things happening in the community that don’t involve drinking and smoking.”
To thank its supporters, New Horizon Theater held its fourth annual Summer Jamz event. The fun-filled evening included line dancing, an excerpt from one of the plays from the theater’s upcoming 23rd season, a silent auction and musical performance by Pittsburgh’s own Artistree.
“This is a kick off for our new 2014-2015 season,” explained New Horizon Theater Chairperson Joyce Meggerson-Moore. “We have a full season set and we’re excited.

The season begins with “Queens of the Blues,” which tells the story of such singing greats as Etta James and Bessie Smith. “Queens of the Blues” was written by Sanetta Y. Gipson and Joe Plummer. It will be directed by Plummer.
The show will run from October 23 through November 2 Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m. The production will take place at a new venue the Makers Theater (Improv) in Shadyside, 5590 Ellsworth Avenue. Moore says attendees should arrive early for performances because there is limited on-street parking.
