The fatal shooting of a Hill District teen has left many on edge and concerned about the safety of the city’s youth.
Twelfth-grade Pittsburgh Milliones 6-12 student Eric Young, 17, was shot multiple times this morning while leaving his Hill District home to go to school.
Young, according to a release from the Pittsburgh School District, was new to the school this year and described as a popular student who always had a smile on his face. He had recently attained a job at a local supermarket.
Students were dismissed from school early and counselors were on hand to assist them with their grief. Both will return tomorrow.
Young’s homicide is the third death of a Black teen in just four days.
On Oct. 6, just two days ago, the nude body of Teairra Whitehead, 16, of Homewood, was discovered by joggers on a trail in Riverview Park, near Riverview Avenue.
According to Pittsburgh Public Safety Spokesperson Sonya Toler, in a release, Whitehead had last been in contact with her family the night before. Her death has not been ruled a homicide.
“The matter is being investigated as a suspicious death because we currently have no evidence to indicate the cause, manner, or location of death. We are currently awaiting the findings of the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office,” said Toler.
As of this afternoon, a supervisor at the Medical Examiner’s Office said the ruling of Whitehead’s death was still pending.
And on Oct. 5, 18-year-old Reginald Turner, of the North Side, died at a local hospital after being shot the evening before at the New Pennley Place Apartments on Penn Avenue, in East Liberty.
According to a release, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police responded to a 9-1-1 call on Oct. 4 and found two teens with gunshot wounds—one shot in the forearm and the other shot in the head. They were both rushed to local hospitals. Turner died and the other teen is expected to recover.
No one has been charged in any of these incidents.
