A jazz free-for-all at Pitt: Week of free jazz

While most of the attention goes to Saturday evening’s Jazz Concert there is a plethora of events scheduled for the week leading to the grand finale (and they’re free!). For more information call the Department of Jazz Studies at the University of Pittsburgh 412-624-4187.
Evening Jazz Film Screening (Free and open to the public).
Wednesday, Oct. 29 7 p.m.
Frick Fine Arts Auditorium, 650 Schenley Dr., Oakland.
The Girls in the Band—This feature-length documentary discusses racism and sexism in the 1930s and 1940s and focuses on female musicians from the 1930s to today and their unwillingness to give up their love of music. Geri Allen, director of jazz studies at the University of Pittsburgh, will provide an introduction.

Music Business Lecture and Q&A Session – Guy Eckstine, president, Iconique Music Group; Ed Eckstine, founder and CEO, Debris Entertainment

Terri Lyne Carrington’s Online Master Class – Master drummer and Berklee College of Music Professor Terri Lyne Carrington will work with students simultaneously at the University of Pittsburgh’s William Russell Robinson Recording Studio and at Berklee in Boston, Mass. This Internet2 demonstration will allow students to play together in real time while at two different sites. To view the master class, visitwww.music.pitt.edu/jazz-sem.

Style Analysis and History of Selected Vocalists – Connaitre Miller, director of Afro Blue, will lead a multimedia presentation featuring the history and style of selected jazz vocalists.
