The job of a church usher is to lead one to their seat, watch the congregation, care for the flock from the back of the sanctuary, from the aisles, share the joy of worship all while giving out one bulletin, one smile, one greeting and one handshake at a time.
On Oct. 12 at Second Baptist Church in Homestead where Reverend Donald P. Turner is the pastor, the Usher Board Ministry presented its annual Fellowship Day and featured “The Small Family Ensemble” and Touch of Wisdom Johnson Mime Ministry. The theme of the afternoon was “Serving in his Presence with Joy.”
The audience enjoyed the gospel sounds of the Small Family Ensemble. This family gospel ministry has been together since 1996 and has performed concerts in the tri-state area and as far away as Plantersville, S.C. The group includes: Leroy Gilliard, Mark Gilliard, Lil small Darby, Patricia English, Sharon Small Ford, Tyler Grinange Gould, LaRue Small Grinage, Ceily Robinson, LeLeita Small, Jeffrey Small and associate member Nichol Smith.
Touch of Wisdom Johnson Mime Ministry was just formed eight months ago and was a crowd favorite with its mimes to selections such as “Take Me to The King” and “Safe in His Arms.” At the end of the afternoon an appreciation award was presented to Arthur Green by Joann Robinson, the acting Usher Board President, and Rev. Donald Turner, pastor, for his years of dedicated service to the church.
