For roughly a decade, the New Pittsburgh Courier has published a monthly tally of all the homicides in Allegheny County in an effort to bring awareness, and ultimately action, to the epidemic of Black-on Black violence.
Now, armed with all the tools a major research facility can muster, the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health Center for Health Equity began an analysis of those same deaths in an effort to find the connections that might end these killings.
The result is the Community Violence Prevention Project Homicide Review Report, which seeks to:
•Uncover patterns among homicide incidents;
•Identify key preventable factors that contribute to a homicide;
•Develop recommendations for homicide prevention; and
•Distribute information and engage in community dialog about violence prevention within Pittsburgh neighborhoods.
