PITTSBURGH (AP) – One of Pittsburgh’s biggest charities is donating $9 million toward Invest in US, a national campaign announced by President Barack Obama to fund and promote early education programs.
The Heinz Endowments gift was announced Wednesday, as Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto was scheduled to address a White House meeting on early education.
The Heinz Endowments is one of nearly 40 charitable foundations, nonprofits and corporations to donate to the cause.
The foundation is also pledging $9 million more to support early childhood education efforts in the Pittsburgh region. They include, among other things, helping Peduto to implement 10 recommendations made by a panel he appointed on early childhood education, and efforts to lobby for universal Pre-K education.
