PITTSBURGH (AP) – Scores of western Pennsylvania school districts are closing or delaying classes for a second straight day as frigid temperatures set in, and produced wind chills in the single – or even negative – digits.
On Tuesday three to five inches of snow – much of which fell before and during the morning rush hour – was responsible for vehicle accidents and the school closures. Light snow was forecast Wednesday, but the extreme cold prompted schools to take precautions for children who walk or must stand outside waiting for buses.
In northwestern Pennsylvania, the National Weather Service has issued a lake-effect snow warning for Erie and Crawford counties. Six to eight inches of snow were forecast through 4 a.m. Thursday, with squalls bringing up to a foot in some areas.
