Community Discussion
FEB. 7—The Homewood Neighborhood Advisory Board on Urban Affairs will host a Community Discussion on “Getting Ready for Community Benefits” from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Community Empowerment Association, 7120 Kelly St., Homewood. This discussion is part of “The People’s Plan for Homewood.” Ruth Byrd-Smith will instruct the community business owners and prospective new business owners how to complete the certification process. African-American Heritage Celebration
FEB. 7—Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum Trust Inc. will host its 5th Annual African-American Heritage Celebration, “Black Veterans With Success: Their History, Health and Commitment to Excellence,” at 1 p.m. at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum, Gettysburg Room, 4141 Fifth Ave., Oakland. There will be a panel discussion; a question and answer session about VA health care and other specific military health related issues; and an exhibit, “Slave to Soldier,” showcasing the importance of the historical legacy of African-American soldiers. Meet the Candidates
FEB. 17—The 12th Ward Democratic Committee will host its “Meet the Candidates Petition Party 2015” at 6:30 p.m. at the Kingsley Association, 6435 Frankstown Ave., Larimer. This party is an opportunity for voters to meet the candidates of the May 19 Primary Election, listen to their platforms, ask questions and receive important materials and petitions. Chuck Cooper Awards
FEB. 18—The Pittsburgh Penguins will host the 5th Annual Chuck Cooper Foundation Awards Luncheon at 12 p.m. at the Lexus Club of the Consol Energy, 1001 Fifth Ave., Hill District. Basketball player Swin Cash will be honored for her outstanding career and tireless work to improve others. Sally Wiggin will serve as the emcee. FEB. 19—Boy Scouts of American Laurel Highlands Council and UPMC Health Plan will host its Whitney M. Young Jr. 26th Annual Service Awards Dinner at 6 p.m. at the Westin Convention Center Hotel, 1000 Penn Ave., Downtown. This year’s honorees include Gordon Gebbens, Vernon Smith, Rice Enterprises LLC, Propel Schools and a special recognition of Judge Livingstone Johnson. Reservations are required.
