James D. “Jim” Lewis, former general manager of the New Pittsburgh Courier, and current publisher of the Minority Business Journal recently died.
Lewis, who published the Business Journal for 30 years, passed away peacefully on Feb. 6. He was 86.
Lewis worked in advertising for the Courier for several years before leaving. He was bought back by then Publisher John Sengstacke as the General Manager of the Courier during the 1970s; a position he served in for a few years before moving on.
Lewis was preceded in death by first wife, Erma C. Lewis, and second wife, Gloria M. Lewis. He is survived by his son, James D. Lewis II; brother, Charles Lewis; four grandchildren; goddaughter, Nicole Cooper; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
“Jim will always hold a special place in my heart,” said Ulish Carter, managing editor of the Courier. “He gave me my first chance fresh out of college when he took a chance on me and hired me as the sports writer for the paper. Even though we weren’t in touch, and battled constantly when he was with the paper. Me as the young know it all, and him as the old know it all, he was like an extended father. Farewell Jim.”
Visitation is at Samuel J. Jones Funeral Home Wednesday, Feb. 11, 4-8 p.m., 2644 Wylie Ave., in the Hill District, and the funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Mt. Royal Cemetery, Glenshaw, Pa.
