The frigid temperatures did not deter the hundreds who recently gathered at the New Beginnings Ministry Church in McKeesport to remember the life of attorney and activist Burrell Brown of Clairton.
The Service, officiated by Rev. Dana Brown gave focus to a man who rendered extraordinary service on a local community, church, academic and state level.  As a Clairton resident he volunteered his professional skills in many community projects and advocated for the rights of those in need through his law practice.
He was president of the Deacons and president of the Board of Directors at Gethsemane Church COGIC in his home town for more than 20 years and was appointed, by Eulogist, Bishop James M. Foster, as legal counsel to the General Assembly of the First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction Of Western Pennsylvania Church Of God in Christ. In his sermon, Bishop Foster referred to him as a friend, a son and “A People Person.”
While in pursuit of his doctorate at the University Of Pittsburgh he became an instructor at his alma mater, California State University. He was Professor Of Business and Economics for more that 26 years, served as vice president of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, a 5000 member union for faculty and coaches in the Pennsylvania  state system of higher education.
Brown taught many courses in Law, Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and was the recipient of the California University Award for Distinguished Service.
As Patriarch of his family he is survived by his wife Anita, his mother, two sisters, four sons, and a host of grandchildren and relatives. He was the pride of the Clairton community that mourns his passing.
Brown was past president and founding member of the Homer S Brown Law Association and past president and founding member of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Black MBA Association and an active participant with the Pennsylvania NAACP where he served as legal counsel for the past 20 years.
