University of Pittsburgh recruit Brenna Wise scored 35 points, pulled down 18 rebounds, dished out six assists and five steals Saturday as Vincentian Academy (24-1) won its fourth consecutive Class A title with a 74-35 mercy rule blowout victory over Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (20-6) at Petersen Events Center.
Wise has over 2000 career points and 1,000 rebounds and won a championship on her future home court.
“I feel blessed to have my future coaches and teammates behind the bench with my current coaches and current players with me, not many people can say that has happened,” said Wise. “My coach and I have a running joke called the “R” word that means rest. I’m going to try to rest this weekend and take care of my body, because we are not done we want to win state and I want to taste Hershey chocolate.”
The 6-foot-1 Wise’s 35 points tied for the second most in a Class A championship. The record is 39 by Monessen’s Charel Allen in 2001.
The Vincentian girls’ basketball team is turning into a dynasty. They have won the WPIAL five times in six years and are the defending state champions. The Lady Royals enters the PIAA state tournament as the top seed.
PENN HILLS KNOCKED ON THE DOOR, NEXT YEAR THEY’LL KICK IT IN
The Penn Hills Lady Indians (16-10) entered the WPIAL championship as the hottest team in the state.
Throughout the season, coach John Tate has praised his team for its resiliency, and effort. But, the Lady Indians forgot to bring the same formula on the offensive end to the Petersen Events Center.
The Indians won seven consecutive WPIAL titles from 1986 to 1992, but was shown the agony of defeat by Norwin (21-4) 54-34.
Norwin had never won or even appeared in a WPIAL championship game until Saturday night.
Norwin Alayna Gribble scored a game-high 21 points and Amanda Batey and Laura Buchanan both scored 11.
In 2016 Penn Hills return two of the WPIAL’s top underclassmen in junior guard Jade Ely and sophomore point guard Desiree Oliver and should be the favorite to win the WPIAL crown. Oliver led the Lady Indians with 17 points.
The Lady Indians enters the PIAA state playoffs as the #2 seed and will face Obama Academy the champions from the Pittsburgh City League in the first round.
DUQUESNE RECRUIT WINS TITLE AT PITT
Duquesne recruit Chassidy Omogrosso scored 26 points to lead top-seed Blackhawk (23-3) over South Fayette 65-54 Saturday at Pitt’s Petersen Events Center. Courtney Vannoy scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
The title-was the seventh overall for Blackhawk and marked the third time they have been able to repeat as WPIAL champions. The Cougars also won back-to-back District 7 crowns in 1996-97 and 1999-2000.
Omogrosso and Vannoy have combined for over 3,600 career points in their career. Omogrosso is the eighth-leading scorer in WPIAL history with 2,562 points.
“I was surprised that I didn’t hit a 3-pointer the entire game,” said Omogrosso. “3 point shots are what we strive on and me and Bidgette Shaffer didn’t hit one.”
Blackhawk is the defending WPIAL and PIAA State champions and 6-foot-3 junior center Emily Anderson led the Lady Lions with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
