Dominique Wilkins statue unveiled before Atlanta Hawks, NBA legends (PHOTOS)

ATLANTA — Basketball dignitaries and legends were on hand to watch as the city of Atlanta and the Hawks finally immortalize the greatest and most popular player in team history with his own silver statue at Phillips Arena.

In an exclusive ceremony located on the very floor he turned into his personal “Human Highlight Film,” Atlanta icon Dominique Wilkins was feted with praise and accolades from contemporaries and counterparts alike such as NBA Hall of Famers like Julius “Dr. J.” Erving, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Clyde “The Glide” Drexler along with former All-Stars Dikembe Mtombo and Wilkins’ brother Gerald Wilkins. Also in attendance were his former coach in the 1980s Mike Fratello, actor Chris Tucker, former champion boxer Evander Holyfield, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, councilman Caesar Mitchell, Fulton County Commissioner John Eaves and NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

The public unveiling of Wilkins’ statue will take place at Phillips Arena on Friday night, March 6 during the Hawks contest against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
