Pgh. Public Schools hosts first job fair at Hill House

Pittsburgh Public Schools’ first Job Fair exposes the general public to a variety of employment options, not just teaching.
“When people think of Pittsburgh Public Schools as an employer, they may just think about the 1,800 teachers that are in classrooms every day,” said Edy Anako, Human Capital manager.
“This job fair was an opportunity to highlight the variety of roles that are critical to ensuring that all student needs are met. The District is also committed to hiring a diverse and talented workforce, and is looking for dynamic, culturally-responsive individuals with a passion for education and student success. Hosting this event at the Hill House Association in the Hill District community was a part of a strategic recruitment strategy to target candidates of color.”
Job fairs are designed to create a level of exposure and networking opportunities for individuals to have an opportunity to speak with employers face to face, and enhance their knowledge in different career avenues.
The Pittsburgh Public Schools Community Job Fair was held March 10, 2 from 4-7 p.m. at the Hill House Kaufman Center. A talent search took place in search of potential candidates to fill positions within Pittsburgh Public Schools.
There were 10 hiring managers and six human resource managers present to talk with potential candidates during the job fair. Additional Human Resources staff was available to provide support with the online application process and provided feedback and tips on resumes.
The Hiring Mangers present during the event included professionals in: Human Resources, Information Technology, Substitute Services, Food Services, Pupil Transportation, Finance, Plant Operations, and School Safety.
More than 175 potential candidates attended the event. The job fair was open for anyone to attend.
“I especially enjoy events such as this, because it provides an opportunity to network and speak one on one with employers. Great experience,”  said Breiona Graves, job fair attendee.
“The job fair was designed to provide access to information about careers in Pittsburgh Public Schools and to provide information and support around the Districts online application process,” said Ebony Pugh, Public Information Officer at Pittsburgh Public Schools.
Throughout the job fair there were some certified and non-certified attendees who had variety of interest in school-based opportunities and central office opportunities in finance, early childhood home visitor roles project specialists roles in teaching and learning environment and family youth, and community engagement as well as substitute teaching, and human resources; just to name a few.
Some of the positions currently available are, Building Inspector, Senior Call Center Specialist, Information Technology Interns, Human Resources Benefits Specialist Project Manager of Strategic Communications, Project Specialist, Family Youth and Community Engagement, and teaching and counseling positions at Clayton Academy.
This was the first job fair held by the Pittsburgh Public Schools.
“Based on the positive response we received for this first fair, we will certainly consider holding similar events in the future,” Pugh said.
Attendees were given helpful documents that will help those applying with the application process. There is also a résumé guide to help with resume writing tips. Applicants can always apply on the PPS website at: www.pps.k12.pa.us/domain/32.
“It was powerful to be in our community to meet and engage with so many talented professionals eager to learn more about advancing their careers or starting a new career with PPS. We received overwhelmingly favorable feedback on our first community job fair,” Anako said.
