15 of 18 homicides Black lives…A national voice needed to address Black on Black violence

Must read

UnderAttack2.jpg
In Allegheny County during the month of March there were a total of five homicides. As of the end of that month, the number of victims in the county lost to senseless violence was 18, 15 of them were Black individuals. These numbers are outrageous.

While it is disheartening that each of those killed last month were Black, it is even more devastating that all of the victims were age 25 and under, one even being 16. These are young people who will not have a chance to graduate from high school or college, vote in an election or legally have an alcoholic beverage. Looking over this list of names, the trend that stands out, besides that most of them are Black, is that more than half of them are under the age of 30.

We are losing our future to this epidemic. Some years ago there was a concern that the HIV/AIDS diseases were killing off Blacks. There were campaigns featuring national leaders and celebrities who stood up and spoke out against it. Now, its Black on Black violence that’s taking away our people, many of them young Black men. Where are the voices in regards to this issue? We hear from them when a White police officer kills a Black man, why not when a young Black male kills another Black male? This issue deserves the same attention. Yes, some are out there bringing awareness to it, but not enough.

This issue goes beyond Allegheny County, even beyond Pennsylvania. We, as a nation, need to address it and we need to address it now. We cannot afford to continue to sit back and be quiet; the cost is far too deadly.

As part of an ongoing effort to heighten awareness about the effects of murder in Black communities, the New Pittsburgh Courier will compile a list of homicides in the County each month. It is our hope that as the list of victims grows, so will a true understanding of how these lost lives affect the mental health, economic well being and self-images of the region’s Black neighborhoods.

Out of the 18 murders, thus far, in 2015—15 were Black and 14 were Black men.
