PITTSBURGH (AP) – An autopsy has concluded that a retired Pittsburgh deputy police chief who was found dead in his suburban home killed himself.

A supervisor at the Allegheny County medical examiner’s office said Wednesday that 68-year-old Earl Woodyard Jr. died of a gunshot wound to the head. He was found dead Monday morning at his home in Baldwin, just south of the city.

Woodyard spent more than 30 years with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and was deputy under former Chief Dominic Costa, and acting chief shortly before retiring in 2006. Before that, he worked his way up the ranks from patrolman, to detective and assistant chief.
