SHIPPINGPORT, Pa. (AP) – The state Department of Environmental Protection may soon cite FirstEnergy Corp. for “fugitive emissions” from a coal-fired power plant in western Pennsylvania.

DEP spokesman John Poister tells the Beaver County Times (https://bit.ly/1IdS8Q4 ) that investigators found the unspecified problems in the last two weeks the Bruce Mansfield plant in Shippingport. That’s about 30 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

“Fugitive emissions” are unplanned releases of pollution from a plant, beyond what would normally be expected.

Herman Marshman Jr., president of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers local that represents the plant’s workers, says he’s reported high sulfur dioxide levels to the DEP and federal workplace safety officials recently. Sulfur dioxide can cause acid rain and other environmental problems

FirstEnergy spokeswoman Stephany Walton says it’s inappropriate to comment on a violation the DEP has yet to allege.
