PITTSBURGH (AP) – Prosecutors have dropped homicide and other charges against two suspects in a Christmas Eve shooting death due to “insufficiency of evidence at this time.”

That’s the explanation Allegheny County Assistant District Attorney William Petulla offered Friday before what was supposed to be a preliminary hearing for 19-year-old Mark Coleman and 22-year-old Ronald Steave.

They had been charged in the Dec. 24 death of 23-year-old Devin Jackson, whose body was found in a wooded area off an alley in the city’s Homewood section.

Previous hearings have been postponed because the mother of a key teenage witness has not brought her to court. Prosecutors wouldn’t say if that caused Friday’s decision.

Steave’s attorney says his client had nothing to do with the killing. Coleman’s attorney says he’s grateful for the decision.
