Lunch and Learn Series
    APRIL 30— The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host its Lunch & Learn Series at 12:15 p.m. at the Downtown & Business Branch, 612 Smithfield St., Downtown. The topic will be “Hiring a Home Improvement Contractor.” Caitlin Driscoll of the Better Business Bureau of Western Pennsylvania will facilitate this seminar. She will give helpful tips for hiring a contractor and understanding home improvement contracts as well as teaching homeowners their rights and responsibilities and how to avoid falling for a home improvement scheme. Chamber Candidates Forum
    APRIL 30—The African American Chamber of Commerce of Western Pennsylvania will host its annual Candidates Forum from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Rivers Club, One Oxford Centre, 301 Grant St., Downtown. Attendees will hear from Pittsburgh City Council District 9 candidates and have the opportunity to ask questions concerning small business advancement and economic development for the City of Pittsburgh. The facilitator for the evening will be Rod Doss, editor and publisher of the New Pittsburgh Courier. This event is open to the public and light refreshments will be served. First Step
    MAY 1— The Small Business Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh will host its “The First Step: The Mechanics of Starting a Small Business” from 7:30-10 a.m. at the University of Pittsburgh, Mervis Hall, Roberto Clemente Drive, Oakland. This session is designed for new business startups and entrepreneurs. Attendees will learn about business structure and formation, insurance, government, procurement, financing options, major components of the business plan, taxation, requirements and more. Resource Fair
    MAY 5—The American Healthcare Group will host its 8th Where to Turn Resource Fair from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, 1000 Fort Duquesne Blvd., Downtown. Finding Alternative Funding
    MAY 5—The University of Pittsburgh Small Business Development Center will host “Finding Alternative Funding for Your Small Business: Local Lenders Showcase” from 7:30-10 a.m. at the University of Pittsburgh, William Pitt Union Assembly Room, Fifth Avenue, Oakland. This seminar will help individuals who are trying to identify new sources of capital to grow or start their business and introduce them to some of the local non-bank lenders in the region.
