FAME Luncheon
APRIL 23—The Fund for the Advancement of Minorities Through Education will host its 17th Annual FAME Luncheon from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Duquesne Club, 325 Sixth St., Downtown. The luncheon will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the scholarship program and will honor the 64 FAME scholars and seven graduating seniors. Dwight Pullen Jr. of CH2M Hill will deliver the keynote address and Evan Frazier of Highmark will be the recipient of the Andrew W. Mathieson FAME Leadership Award. Reservations are required. Spring Speaker Series
APRIL 23—The University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work’s Center on Race & Social Problems will host its Spring 2015 Speaker Series at 12 p.m. at the University of Pittsburgh, Cathedral of Learning, Fifth Ave., Oakland. Guest speaker Mary Pattillo, Phd, a professor at Northwestern University and author, will speak on the topic “The End of Black Metropolis?” Lunch will be provided and registration is not required. YWCA Stand Against Racism
APRIL 24—The YWCA of Greater Pittsburgh Center for Race and Gender Equality will host its “Stand Against Racism” event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the YWCA of Greater Pittsburgh, 305 Wood St., Downtown. This day has been designated national Stand Against Racism Day by the YWCA USA. In observance of that, the local YWCA will make a strong visual statement by standing along Wood Street. Medicinal Marijuana Town Hall
APRIL 27—Rep. Ed Gainey and Pittsburgh NORML will host a Medical Marijuana Town Hall Meeting at 6 p.m. at the Union Project, 801 N. Negley Ave., East Liberty. There will be a panel discussion about medical marijuana and the pending legislation in the Pennsylvania House and Senate. Panelists will include physicians, patients, scientists and legal experts. Vann Media Awards
APRIL 30—The Pittsburgh Black Media Federation will host the 27th Annual Robert L. Vann Awards at 6 p.m. at the University of Pittsburgh, O’Hara Student Center Ballroom, 4024 O’Hara St., Oakland. The Awards recognizes the best journalism coverage of the African American and African Diaspora communities of Western Pennsylvania. Journalism Workshop Applications
ONGOING—The Pittsburgh Black Media Federation is accepting applications for its 32nd annual Frank Bolden Urban Journalism Workshop to be held Aug. 1-8 at Point Park University, Downtown. Students who will be a high school junior or senior for the 2015-16 school year or those graduating high school in 2015 and are interested in pursuing a career in journalism are encouraged to attend this residential program led by media professionals. Students will produce print, online, photo, radio and television journalism projects. Applications must be submitted by June 1.
