PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers gave their pass rush a boost on Thursday when they selected Kentucky linebacker Bud Dupree with the 22nd overall pick in the NFL draft.
The rest of the defense should get some help on Friday in the second and third rounds.
Pittsburgh has serious depth issues in the secondary after safety Troy Polamalu and cornerback Ike Taylor retired. The Steelers bypassed getting a cornerback on Thursday when Dupree remained available at 22.
The team likely won’t make the same choice as it tries to revamp a defense that finished in the bottom half of the league in yards and points allowed.
General manager Kevin Colbert says it’s a deep draft for secondary help. Pittsburgh also needs some help on the defensive line and at running back.
