GREENSBORO, Ga. — A black man who was questioned recently in death of a local White woman was found hanging from a tree in the rural Georgia town located between Atlanta and Augusta, police stated Monday.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has opened up an investigation, along with local authorities in Greene County, to determine if Roosevelt Champion’s death was murder or a suicide.
The man was questioned in the murder case of Carol Lewis, but he was not charged in the case.
Roosevelt, 43, was found hanging in someone else’s backyard, not his own, NBC News reports. And Greensboro Police Chief Ossie Mapp told reporters that Champion did not live at the address.
He also said that after initial investigation, there was nothing to suggest foul play.
Champion was hung, or hung himself, the type of plastic strap that is frequently used to secure cargo on vehicles’ roofs. There were no visible signs of wounds to his body and his feet were described as just scraping the ground and his knees were buckled.
