McAuley Ministries, Pittsburgh Mercy Health System’s grant-making foundation, is about to embark on an exciting initiative that they believe will go a long way in helping to change the narrative that the Pittsburgh community often receives of African American boys and girls.
These images come from media depictions that rarely show this group in a positive light. It has been evidenced over time that if you see something negative long enough it will become a part of your belief system.
There has been an onslaught of these visuals almost daily since the death of Trayvon Martin and subsequent trial of his accused killer, George Zimmerman, who was found not guilty. McAuley Ministries believes it can play a part in reversing some of the impact these negative images can leave on individuals and on the community as a whole.
Michele Rone Cooper, executive director of McAuley Ministries, sheds some light on their perspective.
