PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ A world heavyweight boxing champion has launched a national prostate cancer awareness campaign in Providence.
Five-time champion Evander Holyfield joined a communications firm to film and produce a public service announcement Thursday for the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
The campaign hopes to raise awareness among African American men about the importance of regularly checking for prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer among men and affects African American men 1.6 times more than Caucasian men.
After learning about the former boxer’s passion for the cause, the firm (add)ventures created the campaign in conjunction with the boxer’s philanthropic organization Team Holyfield.
Holyfield says he’s urging all men to put aside their egos and get a checkup.
