Dreadlocks are more than a unique, fashionable way to wear your hair, they are also very symbolic in history.

The roots of dreadlocks can be traced to the Rastafarians of Jamaica and further to Indian sages and yogis, but they have never been more popular or widespread than they are today.

While in the midst of exploring summer fashion and trends, the New Pittsburgh Courier was able to catch up with Katie “Peachie” Wimbush otherwise known as rapper Wiz Khalifa’s mother. Wimbush is known for her outgoing charismatic personality, but she is also known for her beauty. She is not only a beautiful woman, but people are infatuated with her flawless dreadlocks.

Peachie rocks deep cherry red, long dreadlocks that flow past her shoulders down to the middle of her back. She embraced the idea of natural hair eight years ago, and today, her hair is healthy, happy and continuing to grow. And the interesting thing is, her unique hair journey started one weekend while in her living room, when she began to twist her own hair.

“I began my lock journey in 2007, after experimenting with every torturous hairstyle known to Western man I decided to return to my natural hair. I sectioned my hair, twisted it up one Saturday night, and the rest is history,” Peachie said.

For years, Peachie maintained her dreadlocks herself. Washing, styling, twisting and more.
“I maintained it myself in the beginning, but as it got longer I enlisted the help of a stylist, Ravin Bean, who is responsible for the color, and my fun favorite up do’s,” she said.

Peachie said that Carol’s Daughter hair care products are her absolute faves and must-haves! She uses Carol’s Daughter to protect, clean, moisturize, and provide oil and luster to the dreadlocks.

“My top notch must-have beauty product is, Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Refresher Spray because it’s like the nectar from the moisture angels. It’s a hair lift mist miracle in a bottle,” she said.

Peachie had no problem giving us the 411 on her summer plans for her hair and the fashionable styles she plans to rock. She said she is planning on experimenting with some funky colors, and is interested in trying extensions for some volume and length where her sides were tapered.

With summer upon us, and women everywhere wanting to look their best, she was able to give us the scoop on what she will be wearing.

Her summer faves are maxi dresses, baby doll dresses and rompers. The fun patterns and vibrant colors make this outfit stylish and bold. Peachie also enjoys jumpsuits, and said she plans to wear a lot of them this summer, while mostly sporting comfortable footwear.

“I don’t dare fall while walking behind a toddler. I opt for flats with lots lots of flare and when I need a more substantial shoe you will find me in my Converse Missoni platform sneakers,” she said.

“As an active Glam-mother of a toddler, I look for clothing that has a pocket or two to keep my hands free for snuggling and hugging,” Peachie said.
