MINNEAPOLIS — Monica Pearson, who made history as the first ever African American to become an anchor for the daily news broadcast in Atlanta, will receive the highest media honor during the National Association of Black Journalists Convention in Minnesota this year.

The NABJ will honor legendary WSB anchor Pearson with the 2012 Legacy Award. Pearson, the anchor of the 4 and 6 p.m. newscasts at the ABC-affiliate, is the longest-running anchor in the Atlanta market. Pearson was also the city’s first woman to anchor the 6 p.m. newscast.

“Monica is an icon, and for nearly four decades [she] has served the Atlanta market giving a voice to the issues and interests of this city,” said NABJ president Gregory Lee Jr.

The eternally effervescent Pearson retired from WSB-TV after an illustrious 37-year career as a news anchor for Channel 2 WSBTV.
