“What is important is how we represent you and the community. Baseball Clubs were for the elite and if we are not careful the game will be again only for the elite. We got to reach back into the inner city, to baseball is too boring and it is! Turning that around takes time and we are committed to doing it,” said Neal Huntington, Pirates general manager.

Huntington spoke at the Pirates African American Heritage Day Luncheon recently about getting and keeping Blacks in baseball at all levels.

This is something very dear to my heart after being a sports writer, and watching baseball move from number 1 in the Black community to almost off the radar. Basketball and Football have not just replaced it, but baseball in the Black community is almost the same as tennis, and swimming.

Why is a mystery to me? Baseball the last time I looked is the highest paid sport and athletes’ careers are much longer with fewer injuries because it’s an easier game to play, and less physical.
