The Third Annual Pittsburgh Underground Music Awards took place at the Kelly Strayhorn Theatre.
“This was my first time attending the Pittsburgh Underground Music Awards, and I’ve got one word to describe it. Dope,” Brian Findley said.
The Pittsburgh Underground Music Awards (PUMA) was hosted by Soul Dean and Da Button Pusha. While DJ KB was sure to keep the audience on their feet throughout the show, on the 1’s and 2’s.
This event was created to highlight the talent that the people of Pittsburgh posses, and celebrate hip-hop and R&B. The evening was full of fun, and good music. The event was divided into segments of; Cyphers, Spoken Word, Reggae, Rap, and Christian music.
Big Gypsy was the Headliner of the event. Big Gypsy is a powerful four-piece band focused on creating soulful tunes that produce the ultimate Rock N’ Roll experience. With Dave O’Brien on drums, Nick Bianco on bass, and Albert Grandalise on lead guitar, and Big Gypsy sets a scene that is heavily rooted in blues and funk. Big Gypsy kept great tunes bumping out the speakers during their performance.
During PUMA their were live performances throughout the evening provided by; KarmaMusicLIFE, J Bass, M Dot, M. Tomlin, LO, D West, TreeO, Make Em, Ke Ke Lyrics, and Statement.
Winners were selected from 18 different categories and genres of music. The people of Pittsburgh were able to log onto the PUMA website for two weeks prior to the event, and cast their votes.
A few of the night’s winners were; Grimey Clique-Grimey to the Grave RELOADED won for Best Group, Reese Youngin’ for Freshman of the Year, Hail Mary of Best Female Rapper, Joe Kellem of Best Male Hip-Hop, Fomula 412 won Best Live Performance, and Best Male Rapper was Asco.
Best Male Rapper, Asco said, “I been waiting my turn, and dreaming of this moment. Pittsburgh is where legends are made. I appreciate this one. This is for the city.”
Best Female Rapper Hail Mary, “I’m seriously blessed and there’s no way I could do it without the support of Pittsburgh.”
“Pittsburgh Underground Music Awards would like to thank everyone that made this event possible. Please keep supporting your favorite artists as they grow as music professionals. Thanks again, and see you all next year,” said Soul Dean.
