The sky is going to fall. That’s what the federal GOP predicted would result from each of President Barack Obama’s major policies: His economic policies would continue the country’s financial collapse. The Affordable Care Act would destroy the nation’s health system, and immigration reform would topple our social service network.
None of that has happened. But in all seriousness, we must recognize that continued GOP inaction on climate change could really lead to an irreversible and catastrophic impact on the earth’s environment.
Last week, Obama released his Clean Power Plan, which aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions from U.S. power stations by nearly a third within 15 years. Power plants are the largest source of carbon omissions into the earth’s atmosphere. So due to Obama’s executive action, states must now show how, by 2030, they will reduce such emissions to 32 percent below 2005 levels.
