PITTSBURGH (AP) _ Animal rescue activists in Pittsburgh are reacting to the Steelers’ signing of quarterback Michael Vick.
The Animal Rescue League Shelter and Wildlife Center said Thursday on its Facebook page that it is moving an annual fundraiser from Heinz Field, the home of the Steelers.
Instead, it’ll hold the Paw Prints Gala on Oct. 31 at the Consol Energy Center.
It says it is “extremely disheartened” by Vick’s signing Tuesday, coincidentally on National Dog Day.
Vick returned to football in 2009 after serving 18 months in prison for helping run an interstate dogfighting ring.
Since his release from prison, Vick has advocated against organized animal fighting. Earlier this week, he said he can’t take back what he did, but he’s making up for it the best he can.
