Sept. 11 memorial programs in metro Atlanta honors lives lost

Multiple institutions and organizations in metro Atlanta will mark the 14th anniversary of the most horrific terrorist attack against the United States on Friday, Sept. 11, when commercial planes were used to destroy the World Trade Center in New York, plowed into a field in central Pennsylvania and destroyed part of the Pentagon in suburban Washington, D.C.

Since commercial jets were used as war missiles in the attack, it only makes sense that there will be a memorial at the world’s busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in College Park, Ga. at 7:45 a.m.

Other events include, according to the AJC, WTVM, Facebook and Twitter:

The Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services will hold a “9-11 Remembrance Ceremony” at 9 a.m. Friday at the Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial , located in the front parking lot of the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Dr. in Lawrenceville.

The Archdiocese of Atlanta will hold its first blue mass for all public safety officials and first responders in the archdiocese. The mass will be performed by Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Cathedral of Christ the King, 2699 Peachtree Road N.E.

In Fulton County, there will be a moment of silence at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in remembrance. The TSA and airport leaders will mark the anniversary of the attacks beginning at 7:45 a.m. Included in the program will be a moment of silence, a presentation of colors and a tolling of bells.

Students at Milton High School will hold a memorial on the front lawn of the school to honor those killed. 2,996 flags are displayed, one for each person lost 14 years ago. The memorial will get underway at 8 a.m.

In Johns Creek, parts of the World Trade Center will go on display as the fire department will unveil steel remnants from Ground Zero at the Newton Park Amphitheater. The ceremony takes place at 8:30 a.m.

And an event will take place at the September 11th First Responders Appreciation Program, at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Southwest Arts Center, 915 New Hope Road.

In Hall County, The sheriff’s office will host a 9/11 breakfast at 7 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Gainesville. The event is open to the public and Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle will speak.

In Gwinnett County, a brief remembrance ceremony will be held at the Gwinnett County Fallen Heroes Memorial in front of the Gwinnett County Justice Office at 9 a.m.

In Cobb County, a 9/11 tribute will be hosted by the Local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post at 12 p.m.

Dr. Naseer Humayun will participate in a “Muslims for Life” blood drive, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Bait-ul-A’ta Mosque, 1800 Willow Trail Parkway in Norcross. The event is sponsored by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Georgia, in conjunction with LifeSouth Community Blood Centers.
