PITTSBURGH, PA — Mayor William Peduto announced today that Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Stephen A. Bucar has accepted a position as Deputy Commissioner of Staff with the Pennsylvania State Police, and thanked him for his work on behalf of city residents and public safety personnel.
“Steve Bucar has committed his entire life to public service, and provided the people of Pittsburgh that service when they needed it most. I want to thank him on behalf of the entire city for the work he has done here on our behalf over the past year,” Mayor Peduto said.
His last day at the City is Oct. 9, and his new position begins Oct. 12.
Bucar came to the city in May 2014 after more than 20 years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where as a Supervisory Special Agent Section Chief in the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division in Washington, D.C., he oversaw the analysis of information associated with domestic and international terrorism investigations.
Taking the Public Safety Director job brought Bucar back to his Western Pennsylvania roots. Raised in Washington County, he worked as an officer for West Brownsville and the Pennsylvania State Police before joining the FBI in 1991.
Mayor Peduto hired him after a nationwide search, and tasked Bucar with helping rebuild trust in Public Safety after the city’s former Police Chief was sentenced to federal prison for theft. Bucar and the Mayor then led the search for a new Chief, resulting in the hiring of Cameron S. McLay in September 2014.
“I long said I wanted to find an Eliot Ness — an untouchable — to come in and help repair the department and that is exactly what we got in Steve. He was just what the city needed, and now the whole Commonwealth will benefit from his experience and integrity,” the Mayor said.
Deputy Public Safety Director Mike Huss will serve as acting director of the department while the Mayor begins a new search for a permanent director.
