“Black lives matter”…A quote many have become familiar with as the nation has witnessed an overwhelming amount of street violence and police brutality unfold within the country. However, “Black lives matter,” is not just a quote, phrase, or hashtag; it has become a movement.

“In today’s world, social media ignites social change. #BLACKLIVESMATTER started on social media and has demonstrated new principles of activism; essentially, it transformed a moment into an actual movement. As young professionals, we can leverage technology to bring awareness to issues that matter to us and rally our peers across the nation to join together for justice and change,” said Kyshira Moffett, president of the Urban League Young Professionals of Greater Pittsburgh.

The “#BlackLivesMatter” forum was hosted by ULYP-GP and took place Sept. 9 at the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh Office on Wood Street. At the event, young professionals gathered to discuss the #BlackLivesMatter movement and learned how to become agents of change within the city.
