PITTSBURGH (AP) _ A Pittsburgh city councilman wants the city to obtain the consent of a property owner before conferring a historic designation on it.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1UYJ7ES ) Councilman Ricky Burgess’ legislation would rewrite city code to read that council may designate historic structures or sites “only upon the request of the legal owner of record.” In cases involving historic districts, council would only be able to act upon the request of at least 70 percent of the owners of affected properties.
Burgess says the current process is “fraught with the ability for political mischief.” He says council should not “be taking peoples’ rights away.”
He was the lone no vote Tuesday on historic structure designations for a pair of properties. He demanded the council wait for owner approval.
