PITTSBURGH, PA —The Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh (URA) along with the City of Pittsburgh announced today the official launch of PGH.st, a City-sponsored app created to help tame the complexity of the trash and recycling collections schedule for City residents.
PGH.st was conceived at the 2014 Steel City Codefest (Codefest), the annual civic software application (app) development competition designed to grow the City’s innovation and technology community through the creation of technology infrastructure.
Through the app, City home owners receive text messages reminding them the day before their trash and/or recycling is due at the curb. The messages also note when holidays delay pickup. It has been in testing mode for several months.
“This app brings together what is great about Pittsburgh: cooperation, transparency, and a shared commitment to making our city better through innovation,” Mayor William Peduto said.
The PGH.st Codefest team, comprised of Ady Ngom, Tricia Handke, Matt Marriotti, David Walker, and Quintin Lovicks, won the competition and went on to partner with the City to develop the app through completion. In the months following the event, the team met with Department of Public Works representatives to gain input, allowing them to learn more about City processes while ensuring PGH.st would really benefit the community.
“Public Works was happy to work with the PGH.st team and provide our residents with another level of customer service,” said DPW Director Mike Gable.
With the help of a Codefest grant provided through The Forbes Funds, the team was able to build out the app and address any technical issues around the app’s text messaging notification system.
The team was happy to have the opportunity to create something that so many Pittsburghers have found helpful. PGH.st has been online since December 2014. The site can be accessed at www.pgh.st.
Steel City Codefest is coordinated by Jennifer Wilhelm, the URA’s innovation and entrepreneurship strategist.
