Portion of Smithfield Street In Downtown Pittsburgh to close for reconstruction

PITTSBURGH, PA  – The Department of Public Works advises that there will be a closure of the northbound travel lane and parking lane of Smithfield Street — spanning from Fourth Avenue to Fifth Avenue —  to accommodate the final phase of the reconstruction of the Forbes Avenue and Smithfield Street intersection beginning the morning of Monday, October 12, 2015.

The reconstruction project includes improvements to curbs, sidewalks, street lighting, upgrading of signalized intersections, new storm system and new concrete pavement, as well as streetscaping features such as street lighting. Underground work includes vault repairs, waterline replacement, relining of existing combined sewer line, and other miscellaneous construction. This work will involve future changes in traffic flow as the project advances.

This closure is expected to be in effect for approximately seven months.

The Forbes Avenue project is a federally funded project started in 2014 with 80% of the $5.3 million budget coming from the Federal Highway Administration through PennDOT. The work is being performed by A. Merante Contracting, Inc., a heavy civil & highway contractor.

Pedestrians will have access to all buildings and businesses as well as access through the intersection.

The southbound bus-only lane will remain open to accommodate the Port Authority bus schedules. Loading for businesses will also be maintained.
