DETROIT (AP) _ A campaign to get Detroit rape kits tested is using the annual Michigan State University and University of Michigan football rivalry as part of its fundraising efforts.
The Enough SAID (Enough Sexual Assault in Detroit) African American 490 Challenge announced Monday that it is seeking donations to pay for testing of more than 1,300 sexual assault kits.
More than 10,000 of the 11,341 kits found in 2009 in a Detroit police property storage facility have been tested. Some of the sexual assaults occurred as far back as 1984.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy will lead Team Michigan, while ESPN commentator Jemele Hill leads Team Michigan State. Both will use social media to seek donations from alumni of their respective schools.
The Wolverines host the Spartans Saturday in Ann Arbor.
