Oprah Winfrey responds to reports of ‘secret baby’

As you’ve probably learned already, Oprah Winfrey was approached by a seemingly strange man named Calvin Mitchell who claimed he was her secret son as the billionaire was leaving the taping at “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” earlier this month. The man even told the press that Winfrey “tried to adopt him as a boy, but then abandoned him as a teen,” which sent him “spiraling into a deep depression.”

Winfrey has now spoken out about Mitchell’s allegations, and, surprisingly, revealed that much of what he claimed is true. However, Winfrey also filled in a lot of the gaps that Mitchell conveniently left out of his claims of being her “secret baby.”
Winfrey told “Entertainment Tonight”:

“I met Calvin around the early ‘90s, I think it was 1992…I was doing a film for television called There Are No Children Here. We were shooting in the projects in Chicago and I was sitting on set during a break, and this cute little sparkly-eyed boy came underneath the yellow tape to hand me a soda.”
“I was so charmed by him that I started talking to him about his family, his school life, and found out that he was in a situation where his mother didn’t have a job and they were stuck in the projects.”

Winfrey and her life partner, Stedman Graham, eventually “paid for Mitchell to enroll in a local private school and found employment for Mitchell’s mother,” but he dropped out “after a brief stint.”
Oprah, 61, tried to enroll the little boy at another private school, but he also dropped out of that one as well.
“I said, ‘Calvin, this is the moment,” she recalled. “This is a seminal moment for you. I know you are 16 and can’t see the road ahead, but if you leave this school and refuse to get an education — I have tried to offer you an education twice — there isn’t another school I can put you in. If you leave this school, I am done. There is nothing else I can do.’ … And that was my last conversation with Calvin in the early ’90s.”
Oprah told the media she asked for Mitchell’s number after he approached her outside the Ed Sullivan Theater in Manhattan after her “Late Show” taping, but then the media maven quickly learned that the whole thing was a stunt set up by The National Enquirer.

“When I realized the whole thing was a setup, I was no longer interested in speaking to him,” she told ‘ET.’
