In 1905, a gallon of gas was 20 cents, a gallon of milk was 29 cents and Second Baptist Church was established at 226 Sixth Ave, in Homestead. Second Baptist would recognize many milestones in the years to come and on March 7, 1971, Rev. Donald P. Turner was installed as pastor. The Teens for Christ, Wednesday Night Bible Study, New Membership Classes and the Senior Birthday Program were implemented.
On Oct. 3 and 4, Second Baptist Church celebrated 110 years during multiple services with members and friends praising the Lord in song featuring Voices for Christ and held a fellowship dinner at Ministry Hall. The Ministry Hall is located on the property the church purchased in 2002. At that dinner, members of the church that had reached the age of 3 score and 10 (70 years of age and older) were honored and Rev. Donald P. Turner and his wife, Jean Turner, were there to witness the honors. Reverend Turner spoke of the 44 years that he has experienced as pastor of Second Baptist, saying that time has been a tremendous blessing and nothing short of a miracle.
The Mayor of Homestead, Betty Esper was also recognized during the fellowship dinner. Mayor Esper said she was honored and surprised, and felt like a member of the Second Baptist Church family. Second Baptist Church is now located at 108 W. 12th St., in Homestead, and Pastor Turner says the best is yet to come.
