TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) _ Stillman College is eliminating football and other sports besides basketball to save money.
School officials announced the decision in a news conference Thursday in Tuscaloosa.
WBRC-TV (https://bit.ly/1OALucA ) reports that President Peter Millet says men’s and women’s basketball will remain, along with band and cheerleading programs.
But football and other sports will end after this academic year. Stillman has also competed in track and field, baseball, softball, cross country, tennis and volleyball.
Millet says the move is needed to get the small private school back on solid financial ground.
Stillman has been competing with other historically black schools in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, but it will move to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference in NAIA.
