NEW ORLEANS — Former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was shot and killed in New Orleans on Saturday in Louisiana last night in what police describe as a case of road rage turning tragic.
Smith and his wife Raquel Smith were both shot after an accident and an exchange with another driver, NBC reports.
New Orleans Police said the victim’s vehicle was hit in the rear by a Hummer H2 while it was driving in the city at around 11:30 p.m. That caused Smith’s Mercedes to hit the back of a Chevrolet, police added.
“The male victim and the driver of the Hummer exchanged words at which time the driver of the Hummer produced a handgun and shot the male victim multiple times and his 34-year-old wife twice in the right leg,” police said in a statement.
“It appears that it could possibly have been road rage,” Officer Juan D. Barnes Sr. told a press conference.
Will Smith was 34 years-old and a father of 3.
The wife was shot twice in the leg and was rushed to a local hospital. She is expected to survive.
As we mourn the lost life of a former NFL star, father and husband senselessly, we take a look at a few photos of this beautiful family.
