PITTSBURGH (AP) _ Pittsburgh’s economic development agency has signed off on plans to convert the city’s landmark produce terminal into retail space, offices and apartments.
Thursday’s proposal calls for Chicago-based McCaffery Interests Inc. to either buy the Strip District’s produce terminal for $2.5 million or lease the property.
Fruit and vegetable wholesalers had used the historic terminal for decades.
The developer says the project would probably cost up to $70 million and includes improvements to neighboring streets.
More than half of the building would be focused on restaurants, a public market, office space and up to 20 apartments. The developer says the project would take an estimated two years to finish.
The city’s Urban Redevelopment Authority will work with the developer over the next six months to finalize financing and other details.
