PITTSBURGH, PA – Mayor William Peduto announced April 18 that a moratorium has been placed on all 2016 property tax assessment appeals initiated by the City of Pittsburgh.

This freeze comes in response to evidence that property values have been increasing in certain neighborhoods, thereby potentially causing unexpected tax increases to city residents . In particular, property tax increases may disproportionately hurt elderly residents and residents on fixed incomes.

“The city is growing, but in order to remain a city for all, we need to make sure that real estate taxes are fairly applied and allow residents to not be priced out of their homes,” said Mayor Peduto.

The moratorium will remain in effect for the remainder of 2016, and a new policy will be implemented by the Administration as part of the Mayor’s Affordable Housing Tax Force.
