
Janet Wharton’s family and friends helped her celebrate her 105th birthday recently.
Wharton was born in Mountville, S.C., on March 29, 1911. She was one of six children. The family moved to Pittsburgh in the Hill District when she was 3. She was married at 19 and they had one daughter, two grand daughters, and four great grand children.
She was a private duty nurse for most of her life, but later became a beautician and eventually purchased her own salon “Jan’s Salon of Beauty.”
She has been a member of Calvary Baptist Church for several years with Jesus always being the a constant in her life.
She enjoys reading and is very gifted at arts & crafts. Her crafted bible covers were so popular that she began to sell them.
She loves to bake and makes the best apple and sweet potato pies.
She has received two city proclamations from the mayor’s office, one in 2011 and one this year.
