After a search that included 46 applicants from 15 states, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and County Manager William McKain have appointed Coleman McDonough as the new superintendent of the Allegheny County Police Department.
Though they introduced him at a May 26 press conference, McDonough is not unfamiliar to some county residents—he is the former chief of the Mt. Lebanon police department.
“Coleman McDonough brings relationships and skills to the table that will allow him to collaborate and interact with his colleagues in law enforcement while also strengthening and enhancing what services we can provide to our partners,” said Fitzgerald. “We are proud to have him on board and look forward to having him build and strengthen community outreach and partnerships in Allegheny County.”
For his part, McDonough was forthright about his goals, and his shortcomings.
“At this point, I think that my job is to evaluate the operations of the Allegheny County Police, compare what we do to best practices across not just the area but across the nation,” he said.
