The Pittsburgh City League High School All-Sports Hall of Fame inducted 29 athletes, two coaches and one team on Sunday Nov. 6, at the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum at the Senator John Heinz History Center.
Former NFL players Ray Zellers, Michael Booth, Bobby Howard, Bryant Salter, Sam Clancy and Michael Barnes headlined one of the nation’s most impressive hall of fame classes.
The undefeated 1976 Fifth Avenue State Championship Basketball team is considered by many to be the greatest team in Pennsylvania history. Sam Clancy, Warnie Macklin, Puffy Kennedy, Edwin Peoples and William Clarke were ranked #2 in the nation.
‘“The Great Hall,’ as it is now recognized, was the initial idea of former South Hills School basketball star and lifetime basketball coach Larry Anderson. Since passing the ball to me three years ago, the dedicated and committed executive board was formed. This unprecedented and historic event has grown in enormous proportions and has quickly become one of the most important community based so social, athletic and educational events in city history,” said Bill Neal, CEO of Achieving Greatness Inc,. “It is also important to be reminded that this is, in fact, a first time ever presentation in the city’s illustrious 200 year history as well as the 176 year history of the Board of Education. With that being said, the national recognized rich tradition of Pittsburgh’s City League Sports and its great athletes are now enshrined in ‘The Great Hall’ they can call their own.”
