Also at the launch, the Social Justice Institutes announced the inception of the Anne DeNardo McGowen, RD, JD ‘60 Educating for Justice Endowed Scholarship for qualified students who are victims of societal issues of whose families have been victimized.
“Our university is committed to social justice and finding ways to collaborate with others in our community to create systemic change,” said Carlow University President Suzanne K. Mellon, PhD. “Carlow’s Social Justice Institutes are tackling a wide range of issues that impact our neighborhoods, our city, and our region—and gun violence prevention is one of our primary initiatives for 2017.”
She went on to say that the Institutes are designed to serve as an incubator for faculty research and community engagement.
The scholarship is renewable if the recipient continues to need financial aid. Since the Educating for Justice focus is gun violence, now through 2020, gun violence victims or victims’ dependents are eligible to apply. Topics for succeeding years will be determined.
Other donations made to the university’s Social Justice Institutes include the Class of 1966 Legacy Endowment and the Mary Elizabeth Canterna ’67 Endowment for the Social Justice Institutes; each was established by alumni to support the next generations of students who actively promote social justice in their lives.
“Carlow University alumni are some of the most dedicated and caring people in the world,” said Mellon.  “These gifts clearly demonstrate that compassion.”
