Missing Dad (June 21, 2017)

DEBBIE NORRELL

Father’s Day has just passed and I did the typical post of my dad’s pictures on Facebook. I was a Daddy’s girl and I miss laughing with my father. He passed when he was 62; it seemed young then and really seems young now that I am beyond 62. My dad liked to bake and cook and I was thinking of him recently while I was trying some new entrees at Bravo! I think he would have enjoyed the Sliced Skirt Steak with fingerling potatoes. In fact, the potatoes reminded me of the way my dad used to fix potatoes. He called them “arch potatoes.” I never knew what that meant, but I went with it. Dad had a lot of funny terms that I didn’t always get.
The potatoes at Bravo! had red and green peppers and caramelized onions. I also tried the Grilled Shrimp & cous cous pilaf—magnificent. It was prepared with asparagus, grape tomatoes, shaved Brussel sprouts and a lemon vinaigrette. This was also good. You know I often forget about cous cous. It was a welcome change. The other entrée that I sampled was the Chicken & Shrimp Scampi. It was prepared with white wine, garlic, angel hair pasta, spinach, tomatoes and lemon butter. Eating is so much fun. Our waiter was named TJ and he was great. The perfect end to the meal was a Warm Berry Cake. OMG. You know how you like to have a piece of cake right after it comes out of the oven? This is what this reminded me of. This was a house-made butter cake, with seasonal berries and vanilla bean gelato. I hope this stays on the menu for a while because I have to go back and have that dessert again. It was to die for. I know my father would have loved this and I think my mom would have liked it as well. I don’t make cakes often because I would end up throwing it away or taking it to work so it doesn’t go to waste.
