The New Pittsburgh Courier has learned that O.J. Simpson’s parole hearing has gone in the Heisman Trophy winner’s favor, big time. The July 20 ruling granted Simpson’s parole request, and he will be released from prison in October 2017. He has served roughly 9 years in prison on armed robbery charges stemming from an incident in a Las Vegas hotel in 2007. Simpson could have served as much as 33 years behind bars.
Via video conference from Lovelock Correctional Institution in Nevada, Simpson said, “I’ve spent nine years making no excuses about anything. I am sorry that things turned out the way they did,” Simpson said in his closing remarks during the hearing. “I had no intent to commit a crime. … I’ve done my time. I’d just like to get back to my family and friends — believe it or not, I do have some real friends — and I tried to be helpful to everybody.”
The hearing was chaired by Connie Bisbee, with Tony Corda, Adam Endel and Susan Jackson also in attendance via video conferencing from Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners headquarters in Carson City, Nevada. Commissioners Ed Gray and Michael Keeler monitored proceedings from Las Vegas.
The four members in Carson City voted 4-0 to grant his early release. His sentence had been scheduled to end Sept. 29, 2022.
“It was my property,” Simpson said at the hearing. “I wasn’t there to steal from anybody, and I would never ever pull a weapon on anybody.
I’ve done my time, I’ve done it as well and as respectfully as anybody can,” Simpson added. “I believe in the jury system…I’ve honored their verdict, all I’ve done is try to be helpful and encourage the guys – do your time, fight in court and don’t do anything that would extend your time.”
