In my travels, 2018 first edition (Feb. 14)

DEBBIE NORRELL

I love to ride around Pittsburgh and see all the new things that are happening. There are new buildings going up everywhere. I just noticed the other day that there will be a new Hotel Indigo on Second Avenue. Have you noticed how many new hotels are being built? I hope we will be able to fill them. Looks like Pittsburgh is preparing for something major. While we see so many hotels going up, retail stores are closing. I stopped by the Macy’s in the Waterfront over the weekend. I have never seen it so busy; everyone was looking for a bargain. The big sign says up to 30 percent off, however most items are 20 percent off…I don’t do 20 percent unless it is something I really want. I will stop back again in a few weeks and see what new markdowns have been taken. While there is a Macy’s and Toys ‘R Us on the chopping block I happened to notice a new Hobby Lobby scheduled to open in West Mifflin.
I hope I don’t start shopping online to the point where I am not in the stores. I love a good shopping spree. Speaking of a good shopping spree, while I was at the Carnegie for the Aurora Reading Club I stopped in the museum gift shop. I tell you, there is nothing like a good museum gift shop. I am trying to cut down on shopping, my closets are ready to burst, but I saw some great things in the gift shop. Please think out-of-the-box when you are shopping and stop in a museum gift shop. You will find the most unique and exciting items.
Hey you soul food lovers, Carmi is open, or at least it was over the weekend on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I went on Sunday for lunch and had a ball. I enjoyed my food and I like the new location. On Sundays you can park for free. Here is a word to the wise; be careful when you put the hot sauce on your food. The restaurant has removed the caps and when you go to put the hot sauce on your fried chicken, if you are not careful the entire bottle will come out. I asked where are the caps. The waitress told me that people are stealing the hot sauce and removing the caps is a deterrent. Who does that? Am I going to have to start carrying hot sauce in my purse? Say it isn’t so. Make sure you check the times before you head to the new Carmi location, it’s worth the trip.
OK you book lovers, here is another book to win. The title of the book is “Writing to Save a Life: the Louis Till File” by John Edger Wideman. Winning is simple…send me an email, the subject line should say “I want to win John Edgar Wideman.” I will send the book to the first person I hear from.
